If it's any consolation I'm struggling with the running at the moment. I'm keeping my hand in with very short runs but my old enthusiasm / desire for it is conspicuously absent.

...Um...You do sound a bit like somebody having a midlife crisis. Just a little bit.

This reads like there are a lot of things you feel you should be doing. You list a load of stuff you used to enjoy and then seem to berate yourself for not doing them now. But why?

I'm often very hard on myself. And another E has suggested to me in the past that I should cut myself some slack. Not sure if this applies to you or not but thought I'd mention it.

Pete: I absolutely agree. This wasn't meant as a diatribe against Twitter, more a view on how I feel that I have moved away from it in recent months. I wouldn't have met you and Emma (yours, but mine as well) and Ramon (above) were it not for Twitter. For that alone it has been worth being involved, let alone the countless other people, whether in this country or in the USA or wherever whom I have come to know and who I count as friends.

Ramon: I remember conversations. What I meant is that those conversations are more often than not lacking in real substance and length. They are fleeting in nature. The medium itself limits conversation, it limits interaction whilst simultaneously widening it. I really don't think people understand the social and personal implications of using a medium like Twitter, even if that varies wildly from person to person. I think, on balance, Twitter is like anything - awareness of how it impacts you is essential.

As an final aside, I am not anti-Twitter, I am very much pro-Twitter. I just don't think it suits me anymore. But as Ramon says, I may come back one day, and thankfully I have other ways of keeping in touch with the majority of those I find important to me, including your good selves.

Interesting thoughts here on Twitter and I do share some of them. However I don't necessarily find it ephemeral all the time since I can remember odd conversations going back a couple of years, not sure what that says about me really. You're right about getting out of Twitter what you put into it, and when you start to find enthusiasm lacking in maintaining that, then the best thing to do is step aside with a view to either return with renewed vigour or as some people do simply move on. Oh, and don't think nobody has noticed your absence ;)

Well, if you're not feeling it, it seems a silly place to spend your time. For what it's worth, I noticed you'd not been around as much, although I've not been around as much either so I wondered if it was that.

I probably wouldn't know you if not for twitter and it's planted a few other seeds that have grown into more real friendships (often branching into other media or real life interactions). So I'm quite pro twitter atm.

How's FF7 btw?

That's a meaty topic you got there! It all depends where you place value and how that figures in the equation. It's a bit like The Game of Life (remember that?). You create a formula for success, involving things like happiness, wealth, fame, etc.

Of course society also places it's own value system on top and that's where things can get complicated.

As I write this I realise how twee I'm sounding. Maybe this isn't a quick comment kind of thing. Good excuse for a coffee and a chat though, don't you think?

I am reminded again, as I was when I first read that Aaron Swartz article, of one of my favourite characters of modern science fiction.

"Face the facts. Then act on them. It's the only mantra I know, the only doctrine I have to offer you, and it's harder than you'd think, because I swear humans seem hardwired to do anything but. Face the facts. Don't pray, don't wish, don't buy into centuries-old dogma and dead rhetoric. Don't give in to your conditioning or your visions or your fucked-up sense of... whatever. FACE THE FACTS. THEN act."
