tanka and haiku

These are tanka and haiku poems I have been writing for a long time. Some few are about people I know and cared for, most are imaginings, or observations. All represent moments in time, reflect emotions and thoughts, and in that, no matter their quality, they have some value to me.

I hope you like them.

***

so softly spoken
the wind murmurs of you now
hidden by darkness
shadowed trees brush your name
against the slumbering night
the moon hides from you
lest it cast your eyes in light
and sprinkle your hair
with fragile dreams or your lips
with silk touched hope and laughter
melancholy stirs
memories of you standing
enchanted by light
falling through leaves touching you
much more gently than my kiss
all alone again
amidst voices and laughter
hunting the absence
of your warmth and quiet hands
or your eyes watching others
I collected your voice
in many little pockets
and I hid your gaze
in unexpected places
to warm on empty bed days
the sigh beneath me
as i touch and trace and kiss
and paint oil and love
across the canvas of your
skin that cloaks your sleeping form
fog drifts through my dreams
rendering memories new
the crunch of wet sand
folding the sea into me
the touch of your hand in mine
serendipity
gave me your form and your grace
a lone butterfly
with every flit and flutter
traces the air with your name
i find myself traced
in flowing sands and still pools
patterns of my life
etched in polished stone and steel
carved out of my nothingness
there is no hope here
it fled with dawn’s first chorus
and hid with the night
allowing the succour of
dancing prancing despair
nervous girl
for whom do you wait,
hands pacing?
my love holds
no boundaries and
lacks distance
hand in hand
a steel bridge beneath
which way now?
line of lights
leading me homewards
towards you
i’m unloved
in this busy place
where are you?
more than i hope
watching every flame
wings flutter
ring spinning
wondering where
you are singing now
tanka and haiku
relunctantly formed
on my lips
is that you
looking down at your
new flip flops?
in daydreams
unexpected snail
on my tum
monkey dreams
of trees and rich fruits
as do i
my totem
has not my answers
am i lost ?
summer tree
light and green and brown
sheltering
old oak tree
arms bent and head bowed
welcome home
i sought now
amidst waves and winds
found your eyes
hands tracing
an ocean borne stone
like your lips
delicate
your breath on my cheek
like summer
abandoned
i cannot hear your voice
bereft heart
solitude
single brush stroke on
white paper
bewitched boy
counting pond ripples
as your name
the dagger
of the fleeting swift
guiding me
my canvas
is too full of me
without you
uncertain
bright streetlamps flicker
painting me
broken panes
voids of loneliness
looking in
sunset cloud
a golden island
purple seas
did you want
such hopes and fears, this
impure joy
scattered thoughts
full of many things
full of you
crept inside
shutting every door
no more flight
tasted you
touched you lightly
held tightly
bereft of
ideas I am lost
in this room
darkness reigns
suffocating warmth
wilting cold
storm children
wings spread like great kites
churning skies
fishermen
casting like prophets
in deep pools
dusty tracks
stirring with every
single step
transient
eyes ever roving
another path
furtive bee
hoarding your treasures
in wax walls
cormorant
black in dark waters,
autumn thoughts
lines cast out
seated like Buddha
in sunshine
slender girl
burned gold and lithe
morning run
feeding swans
bread in tiny fists
eyes intent
morning stroll
sun pleasant against
both our heads
marry me
message on a wall -
no answer
the ferry,
a simple journey,
cool waters
storm kindred
great kites against the
churning skies
hair swaying –
a summer breeze through
silent trees
on all sides,
so unconnected –
my silence
loneliness –
far mountain staring
back at me
clouds drift by
lying back dreaming
eyes open
eyes caress
all that parade by –
summer mood
our cat creeps
unveiled in moonlight
displeased tail
tomorrow
the sun will wander
by my path
hips like drums –
with a taiko beat
hypnotic
fragrant moon
dropping willow bark
on my lap
sleepy dawn
your heat against my
wakefulness
tied in string
clothed in crisp paper
hidden treat
dreamless cloud –
like austerity
in my heart
