I rarely buy expensive books, although to qualify this - I do buy a lot of hardbacks, which by definition are most people consider expensive. Last autumn I went to see Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer do 'An Evening With..." at the Edinburgh Festival. They sang, chatted, read poetry, played music and were generally amazing.
One of the things Neil did was to read the first chapter to his new yet-to-be-published novel, The Ocean at the End of the Lane. He hadn't read it in public before and it was... magical. Brilliant. Utterly captivating.
So today I ordered the special deluxe signed hardback edition.
