I was going to whinge at the Flatmate last night about how the new job looks like it will be a complete derailment of my work-life balance. Fortunately I had the presence of mind to check how many hours he did a week first and, well, he's at the 50 hour mark. Which is a little more than he is contracted to do, a day more than I am doing now (which is a day more than I am contracted to do). So I shut up. However it did eventually lead onto an interesting conversation about taking long periods of time off to go travelling and see the world, which I think is a much preferable option (leaving aside the practicalities and difficulties) to sitting and staring at my computer screen for 12 months of the year (annual leave not withstanding). Or sitting in meetings. Or... well, you get the picture.
If I ever did make a break for it I'd probably stick to my long-held notion of travelling everywhere by any means but the aeroplane. I love planes and airports but they cut out vast swathes of the world, so they wouldn't suit my purpose (unless there is no other alternative).
See below for a map of how and where I would go (click on it to see a larger version). It is a rough plan, although there are reasons why I want to visit the places I have indicated, which I may elaborate on one day. What would you do? Where would you suggest and why?
