On June 6th I wrote a very short post, saying it was a good day to thank and tell people who inspired you that they did so. I have made a pact with myself. I am going to do this every day, when the time is right, when it is appropriate, unexpected and deserving. People inspire me every day, in all sorts of ways. They make me laugh, they make me think, they change my mind or set me off on new directions. Much of what I do today comes from other people's example, from their endeavours and dedication and brilliance.
Life is too short, too mundane, too trivial and banal and overwhelming. Sometimes we just need to to take a break, look around, and thank somebody. Sometimes we just need to recognise the building blocks of our lives and pay tribute to those who contributed, whether it was intentional or not.
After all, I would be a much lesser, poorer, emptier me were it not for those who led the way or showed that something could be possible, or at least enjoyed in the attempt. I would not be taking photographs, walking, climbing, running were it not for certain people. I would not draw or read some of the stuff I do without someone's example and suggestion. I would not think the way I do, I would not strive to better myself nor dream the dreams I do.
So, I am going to thank you, let you know what it is you have done. It might be weird, and odd, for it is not a thing we do easily in this country, but, well, just try and enjoy the moment for what it is.
And, if you haven't inspired me, perhaps one day, unexpectedly and in a way you wouldn't have thought, you will. I promise to let you know.
